A0 Kimono update

A couple of things I needed to stress, that has come out of the work that I have seen so far:

1. Not anywhere enough prints have been printed? I realise some of you could not print on Monday evening (which I apologise for - ink order problems) but why have so many of you missed the print slots I setup for you?

No printing can be done on Friday, TOMORROW is the only opportunity to print now.

2. We have seen a few prints that are landscape!  To be able to hang the work they have to be Portrait (we did say several times)! It maybe that you have to re-print if this is the case.

3. To enable us to keep your prints as good as possible we have been storing them in the screen printing studio with the technician Glen. That way they avoid travelling back and forward from home and risk being damaged.

4. Your follow peer Amy has found the correct bulldog clips in 'Gallions reach WHSmith, they are in a packet of 5 and are 38mm' Please get your clips from there. It maybe be that some of you can go during the morning tomorrow during class. Look on Facebook for more details!

Tomorrow will be hanging up artwork in the studio, this means hammers, nails, sprit levels and general DIY type activity. Don't wear your best Armarni suit!

Best

Project 6 - Live Project

The deadline for the final proposals will be this Tuesday (6th Nov) at 8.00pm.

We have set up a dropbox for each group to submit your treatment into. You all should have received an invitation to join the dropbox we have setup. If you have a dropbox account already then it should be easy to accept and then upload your treatment directly to the dropbox we have setup for this purpose. If not, then you will have to open an account. Remember dropbox is a shared folder hosted in the cloud. These means that each person joined to that dropbox can move/edit/delete the files in it. Please DONT move/edit/delete any files from that dropbox. Last year a student deleted everyone else's work by mistake don't let that be you!

If you want more information about the dropbox and how it works I have produced a info sheet explaining the way it works, which is on the Lv1 blog.  http://uelgraphics1.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/dropbox.html

If you have NOT got an invite to the dropbox: please double check you spam folder (it will be addressed from dropbox.com), then contact  edgilltutor@googlemail.com

ALSO PLEASE read the following points (which are an extension of the brief) to make sure that your proposals are as good as they can be.

1. Please make sure your pitch is submitted as either a Word doc, or a PDF and not exceeding 3Mbs. We can't have the idea submitted just as text in an email or rich text document. ~ Remember that  it will be read by a professional producer, so look sharp!

2. It's a good idea to back up your idea with visual references / storyboards / mood boards -  if it's relevant. Remember you are trying to 'sell' them your idea, to 'win' the opportunity so anything that helps them to understand your idea visually is helpful.

3 Attached are a couple of different  'Treatments' from a few years ago as an example of how to outline a film idea on paper. Two of these videos were commissioned.  Below is a link to 'The Beta Band' one (pretty weird) and the 'Hell is For Heroes' one (straight performance) so you can see the link from treatment to finished film. And some other ones that show different styles of writing, and one that's laid out with visual references, etc. So that should help you.

4. Make sure your name is included on the treatment itself AND in the file name e.g:  Ed_Gill_C4_proposal.doc

5. Remember that the main stipulation was that the ideas are SIMPLE and INNOVATIVE.

6. Remember that a strong simple idea should be able to be pitched in one sentence eg:  "Jaws in space" - Ridley Scott's legendary pitch on 'Alien'. So test it out on your idea and see if it works. If you can't sum it up in a sentence or two hat it might not be SIMPLE enough???

Ok. Good luck, go for it!

Best,

Ed

Dropbox

Dropbox = is a SHARED folder which is located on your local machine

everyone who has downloaded the software (ie most of you) and have accepted the invite, have complete control of the files in that shared folder. This is the power of / problem with dropbox.

Day Trip Information

Hello first year graphics...

I hope you're all ready for tomorrow (and Friday's) day trip?
Basically we don't have too much to add - so please re-read the information below carefully and make sure you come fully prepared. We will be finishing at around 4.30ish. See you at 10.00am.

...
We are NOT striking tomorrow as we both feel the only people who are disadvantaged are you the students.

Best, Ed and Dan.

We will be meeting at 10.00am in Trafalgar Square on the central steps. Please locate it and plan plan your route there with this journey planner:

http://www.london.gov.uk/priorities/art-culture/trafalgar-square/visiting-the-square

Here are some things that you will need to bring:

1. Sketchbook and pens / pencils ( of course!)

2. Camera ( iphone's will do)

3. Umbrella ( still gotta do the project if it rains)

4. A warm coat, hat and scarf, possibly even some gloves (you will be outside pretty much all day.)

5. An A-Z map, in case you get lost!

6. Some money ( you will need to buy lunch and a coffee or two so have at least £10.00 on you if possible, if not possible prepare a packed lunch and a drink.)

7. Your phone.

8. Your common sense! Please travel in with a friend if you're not familiar with central London. You will be working in groups during the day, so hopefully no one will get lost.

Security marking of personal equipment

The school of Arts and Digital Industries will be holding two sessions next week where staff and students can security mark their personal equipment with UV pens.  This is almost invisible to the eye but clearly visible under UV lights, used by police and security to identify recovered stolen equipment.

I would encourage you to mark all valuables that you may bring to school to improve the chances of recovery if they are stolen.  These sessions are available to all and will be held in the foyer of the AVA building on:

Monday 22nd October 12-1pm

Tuesday 23rd October 12-1pm

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

This week.....

Hi Graphics Students,
Firstly I think you all deserve a pat on the back for producing some great videos for last weeks project. Both myself and Ed were really impressed with the videos. With this in mind I would like all groups to send a link to their videos, please email me this link. If you still have not been able to upload the video to youtube then please get that done first.

Secondly the critiques we had with both groups were really active, this shows us you are committed and hopefully this will continue and improve.

Next week we will be introducing you all to Adobe Illustrator (http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/illustrator.html). In small groups I will take these lessons while the rest of you will work with Ed in the studio. Each group will swap around during the day.

It is of up most importance that you make sure you have a Mac login to be able to use the computers. You can test if you have one by typing in your UEL user-name and enter as the password into the log-in screen of any Mac at the AVA, MPS or the Library. If this does not work you will need to go here: http://mpsinfo.co.uk/apple-mac-support/get-a-mac-login.html

your'll need to know your UEL email address and Student Number.

Please continue to develop your branding idea until you reach an excellent solution. Re read the brief again and again until you understand exactly what is being asked of you. Reductive expressive clarity is what is needed. For the time being keep it hand rendered and on paper. Remember to bring this work in this week.

Zim+Zou Paper Sculptures

I was researching market drawings for 'Farm To Market' advice and came across the work of Zim and Zou from France. Beautiful paper sculptures of retro items. Imagine what can happen when you start to get in to your work and let it spark you in different creative directions like this? See more here: http://www.zimandzou.fr

Portfolio Do's and Don'ts

1* Make sure every project is labelled clearly

2* Position the label on the bottom right hand side, Just like a book. No hand written labels! Use a small point size like 11pt.

3* Make sure each page/sleeve is in order (ie project 1, project 2, project 3 etc etc)
- if there is an odd number use your imagination!
make up a page showing your workings on the project?
set yourself an additional project?
work it out, your the designer!

4* Orientate the work to be portrait. No excuses! No Landscape pages!

5* Do NOT mount work on Black paper/card, it detracts from the work, muted colours work best, light grey, off white, cream.

6* Don't leave any stickers, barcodes, price labels, sticky marks on the sleeves.

7* Your are trying to make this professional, keep the portfolio clean, no crumbs or dirt.

8* No loose sleeves, paper or work, floating around in the portfolio

9* Make sure plastic sleeves have the opening at the top of the portfolio
