The Secret Bookstore Guy

Interesting dude doing an interesting job...

The Man Who Souled The World

This documentary is about the early 1990's skateboard company 'World Industries' and it's founder Steve Rocco. World went from being a tiny start up company to a $20 million success big hitter via a ruthless attitude and pioneering and controversial graphic design on their boards. Marc McKee was the key artist responsible for their success. This is part four of the documentary which is well worth a watch but skip to 07.25 of this section to hear more about the artwork. Thanks to Kemar for spotting this and putting it on his blog.

Apple Mac logins

As a part of DAVC becoming ADI we have access to the vast amount of computers over in the MPC part of the west building. As the case with the Mac lab in the back of AVA (behind the main Graphic Design Studio) you can login to these machines like so:

USR: u1234567 (student number)
PSW: enter (type the leters e-n-t-e-r)

you will be asked to set a password (don't forget it)
If for some reason this does not work please contact go here and fill in the form.

Mac Labs are open until 9pm in the MPC and they have technical staff who can help with non work related computer problems.

IMPORTANT - each login comes with 1Gb of storage (which is displayed on the menu bar once logged in) if you go over this limit it may appear that photoshop or other software is saving files but it won't be. You will loose this work.

Adding Labels to better setup your blog

Adding labels to your posts is easy. At the bottom of the 'New post' window your'll see a text box called 'Labels'. Type in here your preferred label names. I would suggest 'Graphic Design', 'Personal work'.

Make sure you add a label to all your posts, especially our Project work. Now you need to add a menu for the viewer to see the posts sorted in labels. This is done in the 'Design' menu of the blog. Go to the design menu and 'add a gadget'

Now add the gadget 'Labels' and configure as appropriate.

Adding Personal work to your blog

We like to encourage the use of your blog but, it is an assessable part of your module so no posting just anything unless there is a good reason.

Think about your audience, ie Ed and Dan. If it has lots of personal work on there it makes it very difficult for us to see your work and mark it.

Think of it as an online versions of your portfolio. Its about showcasing your best work, not just anything.

If you do feel the need to post other work we would suggest you add labels (tags) to all your blog posts (work) and create one label called Graphic Design, and another called Personal Work. Then also add a blog Gadget to the design. The Gadget to use is called 'Configure Labels'. By using that gadget it gives the viewer (audience) a way to see just the Graphic work or the personal work.

See the post 'Adding Labels to better setup your blog' for instructions.

Jamie Reid

Jamie Reid (born 1952) is a British artist and anarchist with connections to the Situationists. His work, featuring letters cut from newspaper headlines in the style of a ransom note, came close to defining the image of punk rock, particularly in the UK.

Storm Thorgerson

Led Zepplin - Houses of the Holy (Pre-Photoshop)
Storm Thorgerson (1944) A Royal College of Art student, Founded Hipgnosis with Aubrey Powell in 1968. Many of his designs are notable for their surreal elements. He often places objects out of their traditional contexts, especially with vast spaces around them, to give them an awkward appearance while highlighting their beauty.

Peter Saville

Ever since his first work for the fledgeling Factory Records in the late 1970s, PETER SAVILLE has been a pivotal figure in graphic design and style culture. In fashion and art projects as well as in music, his work combines an unerring elegance with a remarkable ability to identify images that epitomise the moment.
